61% of low-income families have no books at all in their homes for their children. An analysis of a national dataset of nearly 100,000 United States school children found that access to printed materials - not poverty - determines reading levels.
TORC loves the Little Free Library book-sharing movement, because it plays an essential role by providing 24/7 access to books to famillies in areas where they are scarce. The more books in or near the home, the more likely a child will learn and love to read. But two out of three children living in poverty have no books to call their own.(SOURCE: Little Free Library Org)
